I tried to go with more of these band’s more popular and familiar songs but I plan on creating a few more of these playlists, where I dig a little deeper into the genre.

My favorite from this playlist has to be “Push” by Matchbox Twenty, one of the best songs of any genre from the 90s. The opening to “Push” never fails to bring chills down my spine.

Fortunately, this is not the only great song on this playlist. All of these artists have proved their worth over the years, and these songs only sample their excellence.

They have recently updated both their official website and myspace page in preparation for the new album’s release. Currently all of the songs on the band’s myspace page appear to be from the new album, including one of my favorites, “All I Was Looking For” and the title track, “Little White Lies”.

While it has been over ten years since Fastball’s All the Pain Money Can Buy, they are still kicking and hoping that the new album will revive the popularity that they once had.

That album was actually one of the first albums I purchased when I was younger. I have always been a fan of “The Way”, although my favorite from All the Pain Money Can Buy is “Which Way To The Top?”, a really laid back, relaxing song featuring the artist Poe.

My favorite line from “Which Way To The Top”:
“Oh, just waiting for the perfect wave
And a place in the shade”

It is great to see that they are back at it.

After much debate I was able to compile this list of 90s rock music. There are so many songs that I really enjoy that could not be included due restrictions on space but there are 50 great singles here for your enjoyment.

How it works:
For each genre of music I will rank the top 5 singles from each year in the 90s. I will provide a link for each song (either imeem or youtube, depending on availability) for your listening pleasure.

Disclaimer: These rankings are based on my personal preferences, not on actual popularity. I think of these lists as recommendations. Hopefully these songs will bring back some good memories, and if you have never heard them before, maybe create some new ones.

Born at the end of the decade, it was a product of post-grunge perfection. Not only does it have a classic sound, but the music video is even more classic. Filter made sure to include everything that would make this video a typical 90s music video: a burning wrecked airplane, shots of the band underwater, a mermaid, rooftop bongo drumming, and of course, a room filling up with water. All kidding aside, it was a rather original video and definitely not boring. It’s a very catchy tune and has been featured in The Girl Next Door, Little Nicky and Saving Grace.

Though it is very likely you have not heard anything by Filter since “Take My Picture”, they are set to release a new record this March. The new album is called Anthems for the Damned, which features an all new supporting cast for lead singer Richard Patrick. Patrick fresh off his side project, Army of Anyone, recruited former Limp Bizkit guitarist and current Black Light Burns vocalist Wes Borland, John 5 formerly of Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, and drummer Josh Freese formerly of Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails, for the new album. That’s about all I have to say for this one – typical 90s band, great song, a solid start for the list. Check out the video!

I hope to write about 1 article pertaining to this list a week so that should set a preliminary completion date for the list on August 20, 2009. It was really fun to see all the old cast members come back to talk about the golden age of SNL that was the early 90s. The cool thing about it was that there were only a few missing from the commentary. The only one that I noticed that was missing was Adam Sandler. I, being such a avid 90s music fan, loved that fact that they included a bunch of past performances from so many good bands. The musical acts have always been an intricate part of Saturday Night Live, and it was nice to see them be included in the special.

I had to compile this list by memory because I didn’t get a chance to tape it but I am pretty sure this is fairly accurate and almost complete. If you see any mistakes or additions that should be made, please feel free to leave a comment.

I was really happy to see the lesser known bands like Blues Traveler get some air time as well as the more popular acts like DMB, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., and Nirvana. My favorite part of the whole show was the decision to have Oasis’ “Don’t Go Away” be the last act shown. This is one of my favorite songs from Oasis and from the 90s in general.
